I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you are unable to locate a main valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the home to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that is done, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to get things sorted.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, clear away any significant things, clean up any water, and put a container to catch drips. You also should turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.
